Commonwealth tech tree review / World of Warships guides / WoWS

By Denis Marasan ☆ 10/Mar/2020

Since the Commonwealth tech tree in World of Warships (play now!) is still under development we currently have a few Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships, and none Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) ships so far. And since these ships are premium or promo and they were introduced long before the linear Commonwealth ships appeared in WoWS, their national specific features are not yet settled.

Tier III Destroyer Vampire

This Commonwealth Destroyer has the following special features:

  • Artillery-focused Destroyer with high DPS
  • Three single-tube torpedo system
  • Conventional Smoke Generator unlike other Commonwealth ships
  • HMAS Vampire is of collector value

Vampire is just another low-tier ship in World of Warships that is of collector value. The performance of long-range rapid-fire artillery with great DPS (damage per second) is spoiled by a curved trajectory. This makes Vampire very potent in close combat and not-so-comfortable and hence ineffective for long-range fire.

Vampire has only three single-tube torpedo launchers with 62 seconds reload. This means that she has neither good one-time damage nor DPS on torpedoes. Another drawback is that the torpedo range is rather short, making those IJN-style concealed launches virtually impossible.

All in all, there’s no point in buying Vampire unless you’re a collector, Australian or pedobear, since Vampire has an outstanding win rate.

Tier VI Cruiser Perth

This Commonwealth Cruiser has the following special features:

  • HE-shells and regular AP-shell unlike British Leander
  • Crawling Smoke Generator and Hydroacoustic Search
  • Quadrupled single launch torpedo system with good torpedo range

This Australian ship is basically Royal Navy Leander with HE-shells, Crawling Smoke Generator and Spotting Aircraft or Catapult Fighter at choice.

On the downside, Perth has regular AP-shells, short main battery firing range, small health pool, very weak AA Defense, and no Repair Party, unlike British Light Cruisers. But the majority of these weaknesses are insignificant since Perth has Crawling Smokes.

Since HMAS Perth is a well-balanced Light Cruiser showing good statistics and provides unique gameplay she’s highly recommended.

Tier VII Destroyer Haida

This Commonwealth Destroyer has the following special features:

  • Artillery-focused Destroyer with good DPS and comfortable turret arrangement
  • A quadrupled single launch torpedo system with very long reload
  • Crawling Smoke Generator and Hydroacoustic Search

At first glance HMCS Haida looks imbalanced, since she has good DPS on HE-shells, Crawling Smoke combined with Hydroacoustic Search and single launch torpedoes. Moreover, you can use Smoke Generator Modification 1 special upgrade from the Armory that gives +30% to the action time of the Smoke Generator consumable, greatly increasing the ship’s effectiveness.

On second thought Haida's main battery guns feature a curved trajectory, making it tricky to hit nimble enemy targets from a distance and her single launcher has a very long reload. All in all, Haida is great, but not as overpowered as it looks from the list of special features.

But since HMCS Haida has one of the highest win rates on her tier she’s highly recommended for purchase, particularly if you’re Canadian.
